Mathew Boudreaux is another NEW teacher to join the CraftyMonkies stable of top-notch talent! In his first class, Triaxial Fabric Weaving discover how to transform scraps of fabric into magical works of art. Here's Mathew to tell you more!...
Introduction by Mathew:-
Welcome to the wonderful world of fabric weaving, where we turn strips of fabric into magical woven works of art. I originally got into fabric weaving when I had some scraps left over from my very first quilt that I didn’t want to waste. I had remembered a Pinterest pin of a weave that I loved and decided to give it a go. I was hooked immediately, haven’t stopped ever since and even co-wrote a book on the subject. And for those that either do or “wish to” quilt, the process of fabric weaving make me more comfortable and confident in picking out fabrics for understanding color-flow in making quilts, which I found to be the most daunting aspect of the process. While the panel in this workshop is perfect for a pillow or a mini-quilt, I’ve used my weaves in bags, clothes & larger quilts and I’m always trying to figure out new ways to use them. It’s an easy way to turn even the simplest project into a next-level masterpiece..
What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-
In this workshop, you will learn the basics of a tumbling blocks triaxial weave, which is a weave on 3 axes. The preparation of the strips will need to occur prior to the start of the workshop. I have a brief video on my YouTube channel that goes over the process:-
Fabric Weaving: Preparing the Strips - Fundamentals of Fabric Weaving with Mx Domestic.
The day of the workshop, I’ll teach you how to draw the triaxial grid on your board, placing and pinning the first layer of strips on the board, and weaving the second and third layers of strips to create the tumbling blocks pattern.
Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
No prior skill in quilting or textile arts is required to learn this technique, but a basic knowledge of fabric and sewing notions is always a plus!
Material Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
- 1⁄2 yard EACH of three different fabrics
- 20” x 20” piece of medium weight woven fusible interfacing
- 20” x 30” foam board
- Pins, pins, and more pins
- Sharpie marker
- Masking tape
- Weaving tool of your choice: elastic threader, bodkin, hair clip, safety pin, yarn needle

Fabric Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Three half yard cuts of fabric are required for this workshop. When trying to achieve the tumbling blocks look, I vary the value of saturation in the fabric with one light, one medium, and one dark (ie, light blue, medium blue and navy blue). When choosing prints to work with, I like to also vary the scale and/or type of prints (ie, small scale geometric, medium scale abstract, large scale floral). These fabrics will need to be cut into 2 inch width of fabric strips and prepared using the following video: Fabric Weaving: Preparing the Strips - Fundamentals of Fabric Weaving with Mx Domestic:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn9llKeGhGI
Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-
While a pattern isn’t required for the workshop, it would definitely benefit all participants to have it. A PDF version of Mathew’s Tumbling Blocks Weave Pattern can be purchased directly from his website (the current listed price is £8.00) via:-
