Appliqué Masterclass!
We're absolutely delighted to welcome Sarah Payne back under the CraftyMonkies spotlight for a brand new workshop. Our very first live Zoom class back in 2020 was with Sarah (it sold out within two hours of being listed!). In our eyes she is a veritable 'Queen of Traditional Quilting' (as well as being a bestselling author on the subject!) so we thought it was time to re-introduce some traditional quilting back into our roster. Take it away Sarah!...
Introduction by Sarah:-
So the first question you should be asking is “What is appliqué?” Well this is a good place to start because after all – who doesn’t love a good definition?
So here we go! The academic definition would tell you that it is the “process of applying one material onto another” – in fact the term itself comes from the French word 'appliquer', meaning ''to attach or apply''. It is one of the oldest types of design, with materials being applied to other materials as repairs for as long as we have been wearing clothes. We start with a base – a piece of clothing, a blanket – and we add something to it. So that is the correct definition – but it doesn’t come close to describing the whole world of fun you can have when you start applying stuff to stuff! This is what this course is about. It is not by all means exhaustive when it comes to the many methods and techniques you can use, but I am hoping that it will start you off on an interesting journey in the wild, funny, elegant world of appliqué!
What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-
You will learn how a number of different techniques for applique. You will learn how to create and use templates, as well as different ways to stitch them down and then add detail to make your design pop! We will focus on Raw edged applique using HeatnBond or Bondaweb iron on adhesive and Hand Applique using the drawn thread method, but we will discuss more! We will be using a design called Birdsong to explore these techniques. This can then be made into a cushion or a bag once completed. Don’t worry, you will be sent the template sheet before the class.
